BBC News: 'Boom and bust' of deforestation
Incra a land development agency settles people in the region as a way of giving them land and livelihoods - a policy that dates from the 1970s, but a recent study of 286 municipalities found that Amazon deforestation brought quick benefits that were soon reversed. Ana Rodrigues believes the conclusions probably hold true for other countries stocked with tropical forests in southeast Asia or west Africa. The environment ministry is now trying to reduce the rate of deforestation, one of the aspects of a new treaty will be a mechanism that rewards local communities for keeping carbon-absorbing forests intact.
BBC NEWS | Hydrogen car to be 'open source'
The manufacturer of a hydrogen car unveiled in London on Tuesday will make its designs available online so the cars can be built and improved locally.
BBC News: Ice sheet melt threat reassessed
The collapse of a major polar ice sheet will not raise global sea levels as much as previous projections suggest. Previous estimates had forecast a rise in the region of five to six metre but new research says that the demise of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) result in a sea level rise of 3.3m (10 ft).
BBC News: UK funds sea acidification study
The UK government has launched an £11m ($16m) five-year research programme into ocean acidification. Researchers say seas are becoming more acidic as a result of CO2 from human activities being absorbed by seawater, which alters the oceans' chemistry.
BBC News: 'Clean' coal plants get go-ahead
The government has given the go-ahead for a new generation of coal-fired power plants - but only if they can prove they can reduce their emissions.
Coal burning power station and carbon capture system
Carbon Capture and Storage - CCS - is the method of capturing carbon dioxide from flue gas, compressing it into liquid form and storing it deep underground in suitable geological formations.
